Letter to the editor / Lettre à l’éditeur

Yesterday in the newspaper (Vancouver Sun), I was reading this letter to the editor, and the person was complaining about Olympic related spending (which people like to do a lot here!). In his complaint he mentioned the 700$ uniforms being given to the 25 000 volunteers. First of all, I don’t see how our uniform could be worth that much, pants + tuque + fleece vest + 2 long sleeved shirts + a jacket(maybe worth; 40+15+30+20+20+75= 200$ as a rough estimate?), that are not that high tech could not possibly be worth that much. Plus, has this person imagined how much it would cost VANOC had that not gotten their 25 000 volunteers? The least they can give us is a few perks, like our uniform and meals when we are volunteering, plus the chance to be a part of this amazing event! I for one will be volunteering over 150 hrs at the Olympics and I am sure there are other people that are volunteering many more hours than me. It would be very expensive to pay for all of our services. Plus lots of us do not reside in Vancouver, so we have to pay for our accommodations and our travel to and from Vancouver, which isn’t always cheap. Also, in order to make the Olympics more sustainable and to save costs, the same uniforms are being used for the Olympics and Paralympics, the only thing is that they are adding a snap-on logo to the back of the jacket. This is one of the first times this is being done in games history. Yes I am volunteering because I wanted to be part of the Olympics and it is a choice I made, but it would still be nice to be appreciated!


Hier dans le journal, (Vancouver Sun), je lisais une lettre a l’éditeur, et la personne se plaignait des couts des olympiques (qui est assez fréquent ici). Dans sa lettre, il se plaignait des uniformes de 700$ donnes aux 25 000 bénévoles. Premièrement, je ne voit pas comment notre uniforme aurait pu couter autant, les pantalons + tuque+ veste+ 2 chandails a manche longue + manteau ( peut-être valent environ 40+15+30+20+20+75= 200$?), c’est pas de la haute couture! En plus, est-ce que cette personne a considère combien ca aurait coute a VANOC s’ils n’auraient pas eu ces 25 000 bénévoles. Le moins qu’ils puissent nous offrir, c’est l’uniforme, les repas pendant nos quarts de bénévolat, plus la chance de faire partir d’un événement extraordinaire!
Je vais faire du bénévolat pendant environs 150 hrs aux olympiques et je suis certaine qu’il y en a d’autres qui font beaucoup plus que moi. Ce serait très cher de payer pour nos services. En plus, plusieurs d’entre nous n’habitent pas à Vancouver et nous devons payer pour nos déplacements et notre loyer pendant que nous sommes ici et ça peut être très cher!
Pour rendre les olympiques plus « durables » et sauver des couts, les mêmes uniformes sont utilises pour les Olympiques et Paralympiques, ils vont seulement ajouter le symbole paralympique avec des boutons au dos de nos manteaux. Je crois que c’est une des premières fois que c’est fait dans l’histoire des olympiques.
Oui, je fais du bénévolat puisque je veux faire partie des Olympiques et c’est un choix que j’ai fait, mais ce serait quand même bien d’être apprécié!
