Pre-Olympic walkabout / Randonnée pré-olympique

Last Friday I went walking downtown to see how things were getting ready for the Olympics. I got off the sky train at the stadium station, for a quick stop at T&T (a Chinese grocery store) for a coconut bun (aka heaven in a bun!). Then I walked over to Canada place with its famous white sails. Nearby is the communications/media/conference centers, which will great many journalists. There were already people milling around with their journalist accreditations. The building is really pretty. Nearby there is this big cube-like structure covered in white tarps. There are rumors that it might be the site of the Olympic flame or an Olympic flame. After that I wandered over to Robson St, there were tons of people wondering in all the shops. After that I made my way over to Granville St. which is being closed to street traffic during the games. There were some street entertainers as well as some art. There was also the opening of a lantern display. There are 40 artificial trees decorated with lanterns that were decorated by children. I then headed to the Olympic superstore just to see what kind of stuff they had; I am considering getting myself a small Quatchi. The Olympic superstore is in the Bay store, which is humongous, it is 6 floors tall (or maybe even more) and once I got lost in it! I also took a peak at the Robson square rink, which is partly under Robson Street; there were lots of people skating there. The rink is right next to the Vancouver Art Gallery, which has been decorated with a huge flower paneling, very pretty. I also took some pictures of the countdown clocks. Many buildings are also getting dressed for the Olympics; a huge Samsung phone with the mascots, a giant Canadian flag, Athletes on the Bell and Bay buildings. There are also lots of flags hanging from lamp post and handy signs indicating how to get to different venues. Then I walked over to Burrard St. and had a bento box, I love bento boxes, you get a little bit of different Japanese foodstuffs. I then walked over the Burrard St. Bridge over False Creek and headed back to Kitsilano, non-rainy afternoons are great!


Vendredi dernier je suis allée me promener au centre ville pour voir comment les préparation olympiques avancent. J’ai débarqué du skyTrain a l’ arrêt stadium. Après un petit arrêt a T&T (une épicerie chinoise) pour me procurer un pain à la noix de coco (délicieux!) je me suis dirige vers la place du Canada fameux pour ces voiles blanches. A cote se trouve les centre médiatique des olympiques qui attirera plusieurs journalistes. Il y en avait déjà qui ce promenait avec leurs accréditation officiel. C’est un édifice tres jolie. Proche de la il y a une grande structure cubique couverte de toiles blanches, des rumeurs circulent qu’il pourrait s’agir du site du flambeau olympique. Je me suis ensuite dirige vers la rue Robson qui était bonde de gens visitant les magasins. J’ai pris la direction de la rue Granville pour me retrouver sur une rue maintenant piétonnière. Il y avait des amuseurs de rue et une exposition de lanternes. Il y a 40 arbres artificiels décorés de lanternes décorés par des enfants. Je suis ensuite allé dans le Magasin olympique pour voir ce qu’ils avaient de nouveau. Je considère acheter un petit Quatchi. Le magasin olympique ce retrouve dans la Baie, qui est énorme, il a plus de 6 étages (peut-être plus) et une fois je m’y suis perdu! J’ai ensuite jeté un coup d’œil à la patinoire sous la rue Robson, il y avait beaucoup de gens. La patinoire est juste à cote de la galerie d’art de Vancouver qui est maintenant décore avec un genre de papier peint de fleurs, c’est tres joli. J’ai aussi pris quelques photos des horloges compte-a-rebours olympiques. Plusieurs édifices sont aussi habilles pour les olympiques; un téléphone géant Samsung avec les mascottes, un drapeau canadien géant, des athlètes sur l’édifice de Bell et de la Baie. Il y a aussi plusieurs panneau indiquant comment ce rendre aux différents sites olympiques et des banderoles sur les poteaux de lumière. Sur la rue Burrard j’ai trouve un restaurant japonais ou j’ai pris une boite bento, un assortiment de petites quantités de mets japonais, délicieux! J’ai ensuite traverser le pont Burrard à la marche pour traverser False Creek et retourner a Kitsilano. J’aime les après-midi sans pluie!
